INJURIES FATAL TO AREA CADET
D. H. Herring Of Chesterton Crash Victim
Cadet David Homer Herring, 23, of Chesterton, injured Aug. 10 when a plane
crashed into a group of flight students, died in Pensacola, Fla., Naval hospital
Thursday -- a day after his mother received a set of Navy wings for him in a
special ceremony at the naval air station.
The victim was injured nearly two months ago at Baron field near Foley, Ala.,
when a plane, attempting to land on a simulated flight deck, went out of control
and struck a group of five cadets, one of whom died shortly after the mishap and
four of whom, including Herring, were injured.
Survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. David E. Herring,, 316 E Morgan,
Chesterton; his widow, Myrtle, and 2-month-old daughter, Linda Sue, who have
been living in Pensacola; two brothers, James and David of Chesterton, and a
sister, Mrs. Vera Hybert, of Porter.
His parents and an uncle, Elmer Bartner of Hebron, had flown to Pensacola
Monday, marking the third time since the accident his mother had made the trip
to the air station.
Makes Presentation
Capt. A. R. Storrs, chief of naval air basic training, made the presentation of
the wings to Mrs. David Herring Wednesday. When injured, Cadet Herring nearly
had completed his flight training. The victim, whose leg was amputated last
week, reportedly was still in a coma until the time of his death at 9:20 a. m.
Thursday.
The decedent was born Nov. 25, 1926, in Norborne, Mo., and moved to Chesterton
with his parents about 16 years ago. He was graduated from Chesterton High
school in 1946 and entered military service about two years ago.
Funeral arrangements will not be completed until the arrival here of the body
which was sent by train today from Pensacola with a military escort including
Lt. G. E. Sullivan, the victim's flight instructor.
Services possibly will be held Sunday or Monday and the VFW of Porter is
expected to take part in military rites. The Rev. Robert Ross-Shannon will
officiate in services at the Methodist church, Chesterton. The
Flynn-Lundberg-Johnson Funeral home, Chesterton, is in charge of the
arrangements.

Ensign Herring's Rites Scheduled For Monday
CHESTERTON, Oct. 7 -- Services for Ensign Wilbert Homer Herring, USNR, who died
Thursday morning in Pensacola, Fla., Naval hospital from injuries suffered Aug.
10, will be held at 2 p. m. Monday in the First Methodist church, Chesterton.
The Rev. Robert Ross-Shannon will officiate and burial will be in Chesterton
cemetery. Friends may call at the Flynn-Lundberg-Johnson funeral home after 7 p.
m. Sunday and until noon Monday when the body will be taken to the church where
friends may call from 12:30 p. m. until services.
