Area Marine Is Killed In Seoul Region

Marine Sgt. Melvin E. Williams, 23, Jackson township, was killed Jan. 22 in action near Seoul, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert L. Williams, RFD 1, Valparaiso, learned Tuesday afternoon.

The decedent was born in Chicago, Dec. 29, 1929, the son of Robert L. and Carrie (Matthews) Williams. He was a graduate of Jackson Township High school, his parents having moved here 10 years ago.

He married Dorothy Harvey, of Chesterton, last Aug. 30, in Tolleston. His widow is living with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Harvey, in Chesterton.

Employed in Gary

Prior to entering military service Jan. 19, 1951, he was employed in the office of Carnegie-Illinois steel, Gary.

Before leaving the states, he was stationed at Parris Island, Camp Pendleton and San Diego. He had been in Korea for seven weeks.

He was a member of the First Christian church, Valparaiso.

Surviving in addition to his widow and parents are two sisters, Dorothy Ann, at home, and Mrs. Betty Daniels, of Tolleston.

LOCAL BREVITIES

Mr. and Mrs. Robert L. Williams, of RFD 1, Valparaiso, just received word from Marine Headquarters in Washington, D. C., that the remains of their son, the late Sgt. Melvin E. Williams is enroute to the United States and will arrive in this country on or about March 24. Sgt. Williams served with the armed forces for two years and was killed in action in Korea Jan. 22, after seven weeks at the front. Details of the services will be announced in The Vidette-Messenger later.

Await Arrival of Body of Soldier Killed in Korea

CHESTERTON, March 26 -- The body of Sgt. Marvin E. Williams, 23-year-old Chesterton soldier who was killed in action in Korea Jan. 22, 1952, arrived in San Francisco Wednesday aboard the SS Marshfield Victory.

The decedent is survived by his wife, Mrs. Dorothy Williams and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert L. Williams of Chesterton. In addition he is also survived by two sisters, Dorothy Ann of Chesterton and Mrs. Betty Daniels of Gary.

Funeral services will be held in the Edmonds chapel at Chesterton and burial will be in Graceland cemetery.

It is not known yet on what date the body will arrive from California.

Area War Victim's Body Is Due to Arrive Saturday

CHESTERTON, April 8 -- Body of Sgt. Melvin E. Williams, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert L. Williams of RFD 1, Chesterton, has been returned to this country and will arrive in Chesterton on the New York Central railroad Saturday, April 11, at 7 a. m.

Friends may call at Edmond's Funeral home, 710 S. Calumet Road, Chesterton, from 7 o'clock Saturday morning until the time of the funeral service at 2:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon at the First Christian church in Valparaiso. The Rev. Percy Thomas will conduct the service. Burial will be at Graceland cemetery.

Sgt. Williams was killed at Seoul, Korea, Jan. 22.
