CITY SCHOOLS GUARD HEALTH OF CHILDREN
Valparaiso
school children have the benefit of a high class nursing service that has been
instrumental during the last seven years in guarding the health of the 2,000
pupils attending the local schools.
Miss Dorothy Smith, who came here from Spencer, Ind., is at the head of the
nursing service. Miss Smith has proved herself a most excellent official in
addition to an untiring worker at all times.
Miss Smith makes a general inspection of all pupils from time to time; keeps in
close touch with the teachers on matters of health problems, and cooperates with
the medical fraternity at all times.
Beginning August 1, Miss Smith inaugurated a roundup program of inspection of
pre-school children with the idea of correcting any defects before they enter
school. The various P. T. A. councils of the city and other ladies are assisting
in the work, which promises to be fruitful in improving the work of the pupils
in school.
In addition to her nursing duties and inspections, Miss Smith acts as a sort of
attendance officer. She checks up on all pupils who are absent from school to
ascertain if they are ill. In this way an attendance check is maintained that
could not be obtained in any other way.
