WAS CITY'S TREASURER IN HISTORIC '65
One of the men prominent in the early history of Valparaiso is James B. Hawkins
who was born on February 25, 1822. He came too Porter county on July 4, 1946,
traveling by covered wagon.
He was united in married in 1846 to Paulina P. Carr. He was the first city
treasurer when the City of Valparaiso was incorporated in 1865, Thomas J.
Merrifield being Mayor. Later he served as councilman on three or four city
councils. In 1862 he embarked in the hardware business with the late Azariah
Freeman in the building now occupied by Charles Wark. He retired from the
business in 1876, being succeeded by George S. Haste and James D. Hollett. He
died in 1904.
