SPHINX CLUB FORMED HERE IN YEAR 1920
The Sphinx club
was organized in 1920 by a group of business women of Valparaiso. The club
became affiliated with the National Federation of Business and Professional
Women's Clubs in 1927. The club is also a member of the International
Federation.
The National Federation was formed in St. Louis, Mo., in 1919, with the
following objectives:
To elevate the standards of women in business and the professions.
To promote the interests of business and professional women.
To bring about a spirit of cooperation among business and professional women in
the United States.
To extend opportunities to business and professional women through education
along industrial, scientific and vocational lines.
The federation is non-partisan, non-sectarian, self-governing and supporting.
The membership of the Sphinx club now numbers fifty. Meetings are held
semi-monthly in the club rooms at the Woman's Club building.
For several years the Sphinx club has aided financially one or more high school
girls each year. A mathematics award is also given by the club in the Junior
high school. The club is a member of the Riley Cheer Guild of Riley hospital in
Indianapolis. Each year gifts of money and toys are sent to this organization. A
membership is held in the Valparaiso Chamber of Commerce and the club is active
in many civic undertakings.
