Background Information
The Vietnam War, which began as a military conflict between Vietnam, Laos, and
Cambodia in 1959, involved the United States with combat units in 1965. America
entered the war, in large measure, to prevent the communist takeover of South
Vietnam, which was a component of America's containment strategy to either stop
or temper the spread of communism. The United States' involvement in the war
reached its peak in 1968 during the Tet Offensive. A peace treaty was signed in
June 1973, but fighting continued until the United States ceased operations in
Vietnam in April 1975. Total fatalities resulting from the war included between
3 to 4 million Vietnamese, 1.5 million Laotians and Cambodians, and 58,159
United States soldiers. Below is presented
a list of Porter County citizens that perished while serving in the Vietnam War. Please note that
it is highly likely that this casualty list in incomplete.
